- Sectional (most common) – Four or five hinged panels that bend over a curved track and sit horizontally under the ceiling. Standard on virtually all modern Bay Area homes — reliable, well-supported, and easy to insulate.
- Roll-Up / Coiling – A single curtain of narrow slats that coils into a drum above the opening. Mostly commercial — warehouses, storefronts, and storage — but used residentially where ceiling space is tight.
- Slide-to-Side – Runs to one side and sits parallel to the wall. Good for garages with very low headroom or obstructed ceilings, and it doesn’t need ceiling tracks.
- Side-Hinged – Two doors that swing outward like barn doors. Traditional, easy to walk through, but they need clear swing space in front and are less common now.
- Tilt-Up Canopy – A single rigid slab that tilts up and out, sitting partly outside the opening. Cheaper, but the door protrudes and can’t be insulated well.
- Tilt-Up Retractable – A single slab that tilts up and retracts fully inside on tracks. Doesn’t protrude like a canopy but needs more headroom and space.
